What is burnout?
Burnout is a phenomenon that has been well-documented in the literature for decades. It is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that can result from the excessive and prolonged stress associated with work, study or other activities. Burnout is also characterized by feelings of apathy, cynicism and detachment. Burnout has been linked to increased risk for depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders and suicidal ideation. Burnout may also lead to decreased productivity at work or school as well as relationship difficulties at home. |
